۞
18:75:1qālᵃHe said,
18:75:2ʾalam"Did not
18:75:4llakᵃto you
18:75:5ʾinnakᵃthat you,
18:75:7tastaṭīʕᵃwill be able
18:75:8maʕīᵃwith me
18:75:9ṣabraⁿ(to have) patience?"
۝٧٥
[Al-Khidh r] said, "Did I not tell you that with me you would never be able to have patience?"
18:76:1qālᵃHe said,
18:76:3saʾaltukᵃI ask you
18:76:4ʕanabout
18:76:5šayʾⁱⁿanything
18:76:6baʕdahāafter it,
18:76:7falāthen (do) not
18:76:8tuṣāḥibnīkeep me as a companion.
18:76:9qadVerily,
18:76:10balaġtᵃyou have reached
18:76:11minfrom me
18:76:13ʕuðraⁿan excuse."
۝٧٦
[Moses] said, "If I should ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me as a companion. You have obtained from me an excuse."
18:77:1faᵢnṭalaqāSo they set out
18:77:4ʾatayāthey came
18:77:5ʾahlᵃ(to the) people
18:77:6qaryaẗⁱⁿ(of) a town,
18:77:7ᵢstaṭʕamāthey asked for food
18:77:8ʾahlahā(from) its people,
18:77:9faʾabawbut they refused
18:77:11yuḍayyifūhumāoffer them hospitality.
18:77:12fawajadāThen they found
18:77:14jidāraⁿa wall
18:77:15yurīdᵘ(that) want(ed)
18:77:17yanqaḍḍᵃcollapse,
18:77:18faʾaqāmahuso he set it straight.
18:77:19qālᵃHe said,
18:77:21šiʾtᵃyou wished
18:77:22lattaḫaðtᵃsurely you (could) have taken
18:77:23ʕalayhⁱfor it
18:77:24ʾajraⁿa payment."
۝٧٧
So they set out, until when they came to the people of a town, they asked its people for food, but they refused to offer them hospitality. And they found therein a wall about to collapse, so al-Khidh r restored it. [Moses] said, "If you wished, you could have taken for it a payment."
18:78:1qālᵃHe said,
18:78:3firāqᵘ(is) parting
18:78:4baynībetween me
18:78:5wabaynikᵃand between you.
18:78:6saʾunabbiʾukᵃI will inform you
18:78:7bitaʾwīlⁱof (the) interpretation
18:78:8(of) what
18:78:10tastaṭiʕyou were able
18:78:12ṣabraⁿ(to have) patience.
۝٧٨
[Al-Khidh r] said, "This is parting between me and you. I will inform you of the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience.
18:79:1ʾammāAs for
18:79:2ₐlssafīnaẗᵘthe ship,
18:79:4limasākīnᵃof (the) poor people
18:79:5yaʕmalūnᵃworking
18:79:7ₐlbaḥrⁱthe sea.
18:79:8faʾaradttᵘSo I intended
18:79:10ʾaʕībahāI cause defect (in) it
18:79:11wakānᵃ(as there) was
18:79:12warāʾahumafter them
18:79:13mmalikᵘⁿa king
18:79:14yaʾḫuðᵘwho seized
18:79:15kullᵃevery
18:79:16safīnaẗⁱⁿship
18:79:17ġaṣbaⁿ(by) force.
۝٧٩
As for the ship, it belonged to poor people working at sea. So I intended to cause defect in it as there was after them a king who seized every [good] ship by force.
18:80:1waʾammāAnd as for
18:80:2ₐlġulāmᵘthe boy
18:80:3fakānᵃhis parents were
18:80:5muʾminaynⁱbelievers,
18:80:6faḫašīnāand we feared
18:80:8yurhiqahumāhe would overburden them
18:80:9ṭuġyānaⁿ(by) transgression
18:80:10wakufraⁿand disbelief.
۝٨٠
And as for the boy, his parents were believers, and we feared that he would overburden them by transgression and disbelief.
18:81:1faʾaradnāSo we intended
18:81:3yubdilahumāwould change for them
18:81:4rabbuhumātheir Lord,
18:81:5ḫayraⁿa better
18:81:6mminhᵘthan him
18:81:7zakawẗᵃⁿ(in) purity
18:81:8waʾaqrabᵃand nearer
18:81:9ruḥmaⁿ(in) affection.
۝٨١
So we intended that their Lord should substitute for them one better than him in purity and nearer to mercy.
18:82:1waʾammāAnd as for
18:82:2ₐljidārᵘthe wall,
18:82:3fakānᵃit was
18:82:4liġulāmaynⁱfor two orphan boys,
18:82:7ₐlmadīnaẗⁱthe town,
18:82:8wakānᵃand was
18:82:9taḥtahuunderneath it
18:82:10kanzᵘⁿa treasure
18:82:11llahumāfor them
18:82:12wakānᵃand was
18:82:13ʾabūhumātheir father
18:82:14ṣāliḥaⁿrighteous.
18:82:15faʾarādᵃSo intended
18:82:16rabbukᵃyour Lord
18:82:18yabluġāthey reach
18:82:19ʾašuddahumātheir maturity,
18:82:20wayastaḫrijāand bring forth
18:82:21kanzahumātheir treasure
18:82:22raḥmaẗᵃⁿ(as) a mercy
18:82:24rrabbikᵃyour Lord.
18:82:25wamāAnd not
18:82:28ʾamrīmy (own) accord.
18:82:30taʾwīlᵘ(is the) interpretation
18:82:31(of) what
18:82:33tasṭiʕyou were able
18:82:35ṣabraⁿ(to have) patience."
۝٨٢
And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and there was beneath it a treasure for them, and their father had been righteous. So your Lord intended that they reach maturity and extract their treasure, as a mercy from your Lord. And I did it not of my own accord. That is the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience."
18:83:1wayasʾalūnakᵃAnd they ask you
18:83:2ʕanabout
18:83:3ðīDhul-qarnain.
18:83:6saʾatlū"I will recite
18:83:8mminhᵘabout him
18:83:9ðikraⁿa remembrance."
۝٨٣
And they ask you, [O Muhammad], about Dhul-Qarnayn. Say, "I will recite to you about him a report."
18:84:1ʾinnāIndeed, We
18:84:2makkannā[We] established
18:84:3lahu[for] him
18:84:5ₐlʾarḍⁱthe earth,
18:84:6waʾātaynāhᵘand We gave him
18:84:8kullⁱevery
18:84:9šayʾⁱⁿthing
18:84:10sababaⁿa means.
۝٨٤
Indeed We established him upon the earth, and We gave him to everything a way.
18:85:1faʾatbaʕᵃSo he followed
18:85:2sababaⁿa course
۝٨٥
So he followed a way
18:86:3balaġᵃhe reached
18:86:4maġribᵃ(the) setting place
18:86:5ₐlššamsⁱ(of) the sun,
18:86:6wajadahāhe found it
18:86:7taġrubᵘsetting
18:86:9ʕaynⁱⁿa spring
18:86:10ḥamiʾaẗⁱⁿ(of) dark mud,
18:86:11wawajadᵃand he found
18:86:12ʕindahānear it
18:86:13qawmaⁿa community.
18:86:15yāðā"O Dhul-qarnain!
18:86:18ʾan[that]
18:86:19tuʕaððibᵃyou punish
18:86:21ʾan[that]
18:86:22tattaḫiðᵃyou take
18:86:23fīhim[in] them
18:86:24ḥusnaⁿ(with) goodness."
۝٨٦
Until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it [as if] setting in a spring of dark mud, and he found near it a people. Allah said, "O Dhul-Qarnayn, either you punish [them] or else adopt among them [a way of] goodness."
18:87:1qālᵃHe said,
18:87:2ʾammā"As for
18:87:3man(one) who
18:87:4ẓalamᵃwrongs,
18:87:5fasawfᵃthen soon
18:87:6nuʕaððibuhuwe will punish him.
18:87:7θummᵃThen
18:87:8yuraddᵘhe will be returned
18:87:10rabbihihis Lord,
18:87:11fayuʕaððibuhuand He will punish him
18:87:12ʕaðābaⁿ(with) a punishment
18:87:13nnukraⁿterrible.
۝٨٧
He said, "As for one who wrongs, we will punish him. Then he will be returned to his Lord, and He will punish him with a terrible punishment.
18:88:1waʾammāBut as for
18:88:2man(one) who
18:88:3ʾāmanᵃbelieves
18:88:4waʕamilᵃand does
18:88:5ṣāliḥaⁿrighteous (deeds),
18:88:6falahuthen for him
18:88:7jazāʾᵃⁿ(is) a reward
18:88:9wasanaqūlᵘAnd we will speak
18:88:12ʾamrināour command
18:88:13yusraⁿ(with) ease."
۝٨٨
But as for one who believes and does righteousness, he will have a reward of Paradise, and we will speak to him from our command with ease."
18:89:1θummᵃThen
18:89:2ʾatbaʕᵃhe followed
18:89:3sababaⁿ(a) course
۝٨٩
Then he followed a way
18:90:3balaġᵃhe reached
18:90:4maṭliʕᵃ(the) rising place
18:90:5ₐlššamsⁱ(of) the sun,
18:90:6wajadahāand he found it
18:90:7taṭluʕᵘrising
18:90:9qawmⁱⁿa community
18:90:12llahumfor them
18:90:13mminagainst it
18:90:15sitraⁿany shelter.
۝٩٠
Until, when he came to the rising of the sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We had not made against it any shield.
18:91:1kaðālikᵃThus.
18:91:2waqadAnd verily,
18:91:3ʾaḥaṭnāWe encompassed
18:91:4bimāof what
18:91:5ladayhⁱ(was) with him
18:91:6ḫubraⁿ(of the) information.
۝٩١
Thus. And We had encompassed [all] that he had in knowledge.
18:92:1θummᵃThen
18:92:2ʾatbaʕᵃhe followed
18:92:3sababaⁿa course
۝٩٢
Then he followed a way
18:93:3balaġᵃhe reached
18:93:4baynᵃbetween
18:93:5ₐlssaddaynⁱthe two mountains,
18:93:6wajadᵃhe found
18:93:7minbesides them
18:93:9qawmaⁿa community,
18:93:11yakādūnᵃwho would almost
18:93:12yafqahūnᵃunderstand
18:93:13qawlaⁿ(his) speech.
۝٩٣
Until, when he reached [a pass] between two mountains, he found beside them a people who could hardly understand [his] speech.
18:94:1qālūThey said,
18:94:2yāðā"O Dhul-qarnain!
18:94:4ʾinnᵃIndeed,
18:94:6wamaʾjūjᵃand Majuj
18:94:7mufsidūnᵃ(are) corrupters
18:94:9ₐlʾarḍⁱthe land.
18:94:11najʕalᵘwe make
18:94:12lakᵃfor you
18:94:13ḫarjaⁿan expenditure
18:94:16tajʕalᵃyou make
18:94:17baynanābetween us
18:94:18wabaynahumand between them
18:94:19saddaⁿa barrier?"
۝٩٤
They said, "O Dhul-Qarnayn, indeed Gog and Magog are [great] corrupters in the land. So may we assign for you an expenditure that you might make between us and them a barrier?"
18:95:1qālᵃHe said,
18:95:3makkannīhas established me
18:95:4fīhⁱ[in it]
18:95:5rabbīmy Lord
18:95:6ḫayrᵘⁿ(is) better,
18:95:7faʾaʕīnūnībut assist me
18:95:8biquwwaẗⁱⁿwith strength,
18:95:9ʾajʕalI will make
18:95:10baynakumbetween you
18:95:11wabaynahumand between them
18:95:12radmaⁿa barrier.
۝٩٥
He said, "That in which my Lord has established me is better [than what you offer], but assist me with strength; I will make between you and them a dam.
18:96:1ʾātūnīBring me
18:96:2zubarᵃsheets
18:96:3ₐlḥadīdⁱ(of) iron"
18:96:6sāwāhe (had) leveled
18:96:7baynᵃbetween
18:96:8ₐlṣṣadafaynⁱthe two cliffs,
18:96:9qālᵃhe said,
18:96:10ᵤnfuḫū"Blow,"
18:96:13jaʕalahuhe made it
18:96:15qālᵃhe said,
18:96:16ʾātūnī"Bring me,
18:96:18ʕalayhⁱover it
18:96:19qiṭraⁿmolten copper."
۝٩٦
Bring me sheets of iron" - until, when he had leveled [them] between the two mountain walls, he said, "Blow [with bellows]," until when he had made it [like] fire, he said, "Bring me, that I may pour over it molten copper."
18:97:2ᵢsṭāʕūthey were able
18:97:4yaẓharūhᵘscale it
18:97:5wamāand not
18:97:6ᵢstaṭāʕūthey were able
18:97:8naqbaⁿ(to do) any penetration.
۝٩٧
So Gog and Magog were unable to pass over it, nor were they able [to effect] in it any penetration.
18:98:1qālᵃHe said,
18:98:3raḥmaẗᵘⁿ(is) a mercy
18:98:5rrabbīmy Lord.
18:98:6faʾiðāBut when
18:98:7jāʾᵃcomes
18:98:8waʕdᵘ(the) Promise
18:98:9rabbī(of) my Lord,
18:98:10jaʕalahuHe will make it
18:98:12wakānᵃAnd is
18:98:13waʕdᵘ(the) Promise
18:98:14rabbī(of) my Lord
18:98:15ḥaqqaⁿtrue."
۝٩٨
[Dhul-Qarnayn] said, "This is a mercy from my Lord; but when the promise of my Lord comes, He will make it level, and ever is the promise of my Lord true."
