۝٣١
And when Our verses are recited to them, they say, "We have heard. If we willed, we could say [something] like this. This is not but legends of the former peoples."
8:32:1waʾiðAnd when
8:32:2qālūthey said,
8:32:3ₐllahummᵃ"O Allah!
8:32:7huwᵃ[it]

۝٣٢
And [remember] when they said, "O Allah, if this should be the truth from You, then rain down upon us stones from the sky or bring us a painful punishment."
8:33:1wamāBut not
8:33:3ₐllahᵘ(for) Allah
8:33:4liyuʕaððibahumthat He punishes them
8:33:5waʾantᵃwhile you
8:33:6fīhim(are) among them,
8:33:7wamāand not
8:33:9ₐllahᵘAllah
8:33:10muʕaððibahumthe One Who punishes them
8:33:11wahumwhile they
8:33:12yastaġfirūnᵃseek forgiveness.
۝٣٣
But Allah would not punish them while you, [O Muhammad], are among them, and Allah would not punish them while they seek forgiveness.
8:34:1wamāBut what
8:34:2lahum(is) for them
8:34:3ʾallāthat not
8:34:4yuʕaððibahumᵘ(should) punish them
8:34:5ₐllahᵘAllah
8:34:6wahumwhile they

8:34:8ʕanⁱfrom
8:34:9ₐlmasjidⁱAl-Masjid
8:34:10ₐlḥarāmⁱAl-Haraam,
8:34:11wamāwhile not
8:34:13ʾawliyāʾahuits guardians?
8:34:14ʾinNot (can be)
8:34:15ʾawliyāʾuhuits guardians
8:34:16ʾillāexcept
8:34:17ₐlmuttaqūnᵃthe ones who fear Allah,
8:34:19ʾakθarahummost of them
8:34:20(do) not
۝٣٤
But why should Allah not punish them while they obstruct [people] from al-Masjid al- Haram and they were not [fit to be] its guardians? Its [true] guardians are not but the righteous, but most of them do not know.
8:35:1wamāAnd not
8:35:3ṣalātuhumtheir prayer
8:35:5ₐlbaytⁱthe House
8:35:6ʾillāexcept
8:35:7mukāʾᵃⁿwhistling
8:35:8wataṣdiyaẗᵃⁿand clapping.
8:35:10ₐlʕaðābᵃthe punishment
8:35:11bimābecause
8:35:12kuntumyou used to
8:35:13takfurūnᵃdisbelieve.
۝٣٥
And their prayer at the House was not except whistling and handclapping. So taste the punishment for what you disbelieved.
8:36:1ʾinnᵃIndeed,
8:36:2ₐllaðīnᵃthose who
8:36:3kafarūdisbelieve,
8:36:4yunfiqūnᵃthey spend
8:36:5ʾamwālahumtheir wealth
8:36:6liyaṣuddūto hinder (people)
8:36:7ʕanfrom
8:36:8sabīlⁱ(the) way
8:36:9ₐllahⁱ(of) Allah.
8:36:10fasayunfiqūnahāSo they will spend it,
8:36:11θummᵃthen
8:36:12takūnᵘit will be
8:36:14ḥasraẗᵃⁿa regret,
8:36:15θummᵃthen
8:36:16yuġlabūnᵃthey will be overcome.
8:36:17waₐllaðīnᵃAnd those who
8:36:18kafarūdisbelieve,
8:36:21yuḥšarūnᵃthey will be gathered.
۝٣٦
Indeed, those who disbelieve spend their wealth to avert [people] from the way of Allah. So they will spend it; then it will be for them a [source of] regret; then they will be overcome. And those who have disbelieved - unto Hell they will be gathered.
8:37:1liyamīzᵃThat may distinguish
8:37:2ₐllahᵘAllah
8:37:3ₐlḫabīθᵃthe wicked
8:37:4minᵃfrom
8:37:5ₐlṭṭayyibⁱthe good,
8:37:6wayajʕalᵃand place
8:37:7ₐlḫabīθᵃthe wicked

8:37:11fayarkumahuand heap them
8:37:12jamīʕaⁿall together,
8:37:13fayajʕalahuand put them
8:37:17humᵘthey
8:37:18ₐlḫāsirūnᵃ(are) the losers.
۝٣٧
[This is] so that Allah may distinguish the wicked from the good and place the wicked some of them upon others and heap them all together and put them into Hell. It is those who are the losers.
8:38:2llillaðīnᵃto those who
8:38:5yantahūthey cease
8:38:6yuġfarwill be forgiven
8:38:7lahumfor them
8:38:9qad[verily]
8:38:10salafᵃ(is) past.
8:38:11waʾinBut if
8:38:12yaʕūdūthey return
8:38:13faqadthen verily
8:38:14maḍatpreceded
8:38:15sunnatᵘ(the) practice
8:38:16ₐlʾawwalīnᵃ(of) the former (people).
۝٣٨
Say to those who have disbelieved [that] if they cease, what has previously occurred will be forgiven for them. But if they return [to hostility] - then the precedent of the former [rebellious] peoples has already taken place.
8:39:1waqātilūhumAnd fight them
8:39:4takūnᵃthere is
8:39:5fitnaẗᵘⁿoppression
8:39:6wayakūnᵃand is
8:39:7ₐlddīnᵘthe religion
8:39:8kulluhuall of it
8:39:9lillahⁱfor Allah.
8:39:10faʾinⁱBut if
8:39:11ᵢntahawthey cease,
8:39:12faʾinnᵃthen indeed,
8:39:13ₐllahᵃAllah
8:39:14bimāof what
8:39:15yaʕmalūnᵃthey do
8:39:16baṣīrᵘⁿ(is) All-Seer.
۝٣٩
And fight them until there is no fitnah and [until] the religion, all of it, is for Allah. And if they cease - then indeed, Allah is Seeing of what they do.
8:40:1waʾinAnd if
8:40:2tawallawthey turn away
8:40:4ʾannᵃthat
8:40:5ₐllahᵃAllah
8:40:6mawlākum(is) your Protector,

But if they turn away - then know that Allah is your protector. Excellent is the protector, and Excellent is the helper.
