The Pleading Woman
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
58:1:1qadIndeed,
58:1:2samiʕᵃAllah has heard
58:1:4qawlᵃ(the) speech
58:1:5ₐllatī(of one) who
58:1:6tujādilukᵃdisputes with you
58:1:7concerning
58:1:8zawjihāher husband
58:1:9wataštakīand she directs her complaint
58:1:11ₐllahⁱAllah.
58:1:12waₐllahᵘAnd Allah
58:1:14taḥāwurakumā(the) dialogue of both of you.
58:1:15ʾinnᵃIndeed,
58:1:16ₐllahᵃAllah
58:1:17samīʕᵘⁿᵐ(is) All-Hearer,
58:1:18baṣīrᵘⁿAll-Seer.
۝١
Certainly has Allah heard the speech of the one who argues with you, [O Muhammad], concerning her husband and directs her complaint to Allah. And Allah hears your dialogue; indeed, Allah is Hearing and Seeing.
58:2:1ₐllaðīnᵃThose who
58:2:2yuẓāhirūnᵃpronounce zihar
58:2:3minkumamong you
58:2:4mmin[from]
58:2:5nnisāʾihim(to) their wives,
58:2:7hunnᵃthey
58:2:8ʾummahātihim(are) their mothers.
58:2:10ʾummahātuhum(are) their mothers
58:2:11ʾillāexcept
58:2:12ₐllāʾīthose who
58:2:13waladnahumgave them birth.
58:2:14waʾinnahumAnd indeed, they
58:2:15layaqūlūnᵃsurely say
58:2:16munkaraⁿan evil
58:2:18ₐlqawlⁱ[the] word
58:2:19wazūraⁿand a lie.
58:2:20waʾinnᵃBut indeed,
58:2:21ₐllahᵃAllah
58:2:22laʕafuwwᵘⁿ(is) surely, Oft-Pardoning,
58:2:23ġafūrᵘⁿOft-Forgiving.
۝٢
Those who pronounce thihar among you [to separate] from their wives - they are not [consequently] their mothers. Their mothers are none but those who gave birth to them. And indeed, they are saying an objectionable statement and a falsehood. But indeed, Allah is Pardoning and Forgiving.
58:3:1waₐllaðīnᵃAnd those who
58:3:2yuẓāhirūnᵃpronounce zihar
58:3:3min[from]
58:3:4nnisāʾihim(to) their wives
58:3:5θummᵃthen
58:3:6yaʕūdūnᵃgo back
58:3:7limāon what
58:3:8qālūthey said,
58:3:9fataḥrīrᵘthen freeing
58:3:10raqabaẗⁱⁿ(of) a slave
58:3:11mminbefore
58:3:13ʾan[that]
58:3:14yatamāssāthey touch each other.
58:3:16tūʕaẓūnᵃyou are admonished
58:3:18waₐllahᵘAnd Allah
58:3:19bimāof what
58:3:21ḫabīrᵘⁿ(is) All-Aware.
۝٣
And those who pronounce thihar from their wives and then [wish to] go back on what they said - then [there must be] the freeing of a slave before they touch one another. That is what you are admonished thereby; and Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
58:4:1famanThen whoever
58:4:2llam(does) not
58:4:4faṣiyāmᵘthen fasting
58:4:5šahraynⁱ(for) two months
58:4:6mutatābiʕaynⁱconsecutively
58:4:7minbefore
58:4:9ʾan[that]
58:4:10yatamāssāthey both touch each other.
58:4:11famanBut (he) who
58:4:13yastaṭiʕis able
58:4:14faʾiṭʕāmᵘthen (the) feeding
58:4:15sittīnᵃ(of) sixty
58:4:16miskīnaⁿneedy one(s).
58:4:17ðālikᵃThat -
58:4:18lituʾminūso that you may believe
58:4:19biₐllahⁱin Allah
58:4:20warasūlihiand His Messenger,
58:4:21watilkᵃand these
58:4:22ḥudūdᵘ(are the) limits
58:4:23ₐllahⁱ(of) Allah,
58:4:24walilkāfirīnᵃand for the disbelievers
58:4:25ʕaðābᵘⁿ(is) a punishment
58:4:26ʾalīmᵘⁿpainful.
۝٤
And he who does not find [a slave] - then a fast for two months consecutively before they touch one another; and he who is unable - then the feeding of sixty poor persons. That is for you to believe [completely] in Allah and His Messenger; and those are the limits [set by] Allah. And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment.
58:5:1ʾinnᵃIndeed,
58:5:2ₐllaðīnᵃthose who
58:5:3yuḥāddūnᵃoppose
58:5:4ₐllahᵃAllah
58:5:5warasūlahuand His Messenger
58:5:6kubitū(will) be disgraced
58:5:8kubitᵃwere disgraced
58:5:9ₐllaðīnᵃthose
58:5:10minbefore them.
58:5:12waqadAnd certainly
58:5:13ʾanzalnāWe have sent down
58:5:14ʾāyātⁱⁿVerses
58:5:15bayyinātⁱⁿclear.
58:5:16walilkāfirīnᵃAnd for the disbelievers
58:5:17ʕaðābᵘⁿ(is) a punishment
58:5:18mmuhīnᵘⁿhumiliating.
۝٥
Indeed, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger are abased as those before them were abased. And We have certainly sent down verses of clear evidence. And for the disbelievers is a humiliating punishment.
58:6:1yawmᵃ(On the) Day
58:6:2yabʕaθuhumᵘ(when) Allah will raise them
58:6:5fayunabbiʾuhumand inform them
58:6:6bimāof what
58:6:8ʾaḥṣāhᵘAllah has recorded it
58:6:10wanasūhᵘwhile they forgot it.
58:6:11waₐllahᵘAnd Allah
58:6:12ʕalā(is) over
58:6:14šayʾⁱⁿthings
58:6:15šahīdᵘⁿa Witness.
۝٦
On the Day when Allah will resurrect them all and inform them of what they did. Allah had enumerated it, while they forgot it; and Allah is, over all things, Witness.
58:7:1ʾalamDo not
58:7:2tarᵃyou see
58:7:3ʾannᵃthat
58:7:4ₐllahᵃAllah
58:7:5yaʕlamᵘknows
58:7:6whatever
58:7:7(is) in
58:7:8ₐlssamāwātⁱthe heavens
58:7:9wamāand whatever
58:7:10(is) in
58:7:11ₐlʾarḍⁱthe earth?
58:7:13yakūnᵘthere is
58:7:15nnajwāsecret counsel
58:7:16θalāθaẗⁱⁿ(of) three
58:7:18huwᵃHe (is)
58:7:19rābiʕuhum(the) fourth of them,
58:7:20walāand not
58:7:21ḫamsaẗⁱⁿfive
58:7:23huwᵃHe (is)
58:7:24sādisuhum(the) sixth of them,
58:7:28ðālikᵃthat
58:7:33maʕahum(is) with them
58:7:34ʾaynᵃwherever
58:7:37θummᵃThen
58:7:38yunabbiʾuhumHe will inform them
58:7:39bimāof what
58:7:41yawmᵃ(on the) Day
58:7:42ₐlqiyāmaẗⁱ(of) the Resurrection.
58:7:43ʾinnᵃIndeed,
58:7:44ₐllahᵃAllah
58:7:45bikullⁱof every
58:7:46šayʾⁱⁿthing
58:7:47ʕalīmᵘⁿ(is) All-Knower.
۝٧
Have you not considered that Allah knows what is in the heavens and what is on the earth? There is in no private conversation three but that He is the fourth of them, nor are there five but that He is the sixth of them - and no less than that and no more except that He is with them [in knowledge] wherever they are. Then He will inform them of what they did, on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed Allah is, of all things, Knowing.
58:8:1ʾalamDo not
58:8:2tarᵃyou see
58:8:4ₐllaðīnᵃthose who
58:8:5nuhūwere forbidden
58:8:6ʕanⁱfrom
58:8:7ₐlnnajwāsecret counsels,
58:8:8θummᵃthen
58:8:9yaʕūdūnᵃthey return
58:8:10limāto what
58:8:11nuhūthey were forbidden
58:8:12ʕanhᵘfrom [it],
58:8:13wayatanājawnᵃand they hold secret counsels
58:8:14biₐlʾiθmⁱfor sin
58:8:15waₐlʕudwānⁱand aggression
58:8:16wamaʕṣiyatⁱand disobedience
58:8:17ₐlrrasūlⁱ(to) the Messenger?
58:8:18waʾiðāAnd when
58:8:19jāʾūkᵃthey come to you,
58:8:20ḥayyawkᵃthey greet you
58:8:21bimāwith what
58:8:23yuḥayyikᵃgreets you
58:8:24bihⁱtherewith
58:8:25ₐllahᵘAllah,
58:8:26wayaqūlūnᵃand they say
58:8:28ʾanfusihimthemselves,
58:8:29lawlā"Why (does) not
58:8:30yuʕaððibunāAllah punish us
58:8:32bimāfor what
58:8:33naqūlᵘwe say?"
58:8:34ḥasbuhumSufficient (for) them
58:8:35jahannamᵘ(is) Hell,
58:8:36yaṣlawnahāthey will burn in it
58:8:37fabiʾsᵃand worst is
58:8:38ₐlmaṣīrᵘthe destination.
۝٨
Have you not considered those who were forbidden from private conversation, then they return to that which they were forbidden and converse among themselves about sin and aggression and disobedience to the Messenger? And when they come to you, they greet you with that [word] by which Allah does not greet you and say among themselves, "Why does Allah not punish us for what we say?" Sufficient for them is Hell, which they will [enter to] burn, and wretched is the destination.
58:9:1yāʾayyuhāO you who believe!
58:9:4ʾiðāWhen
58:9:5tanājaytumyou hold secret counsel
58:9:6falāthen (do) not
58:9:7tatanājawhold secret counsel
58:9:8biₐlʾiθmⁱfor sin
58:9:9waₐlʕudwānⁱand aggression
58:9:10wamaʕṣiyatⁱand disobedience
58:9:11ₐlrrasūlⁱ(to) the Messenger,
58:9:12watanājawbut hold secret counsel
58:9:13biₐlbirrⁱfor righteousness
58:9:14waₐlttaqwāand piety.
58:9:16ₐllahᵃAllah,
58:9:17ₐllaðīthe One Who,
58:9:18ʾilayhⁱto Him
58:9:19tuḥšarūnᵃyou will be gathered.
۝٩
O you who have believed, when you converse privately, do not converse about sin and aggression and disobedience to the Messenger but converse about righteousness and piety. And fear Allah, to whom you will be gathered.
58:10:2ₐlnnajwāthe secret counsels
58:10:3minᵃ(are) from
58:10:4ₐlššayṭānⁱthe Shaitaan
58:10:5liyaḥzunᵃthat he may grieve
58:10:6ₐllaðīnᵃthose who
58:10:8walaysᵃbut not
58:10:9biḍārrihimhe (can) harm them
58:10:10šayʾaⁿ(in) anything
58:10:12biʾiðnⁱby Allah's permission.
58:10:14waʕalāAnd upon
58:10:15ₐllahⁱAllah
58:10:16falyatawakkalⁱlet put (their) trust
58:10:17ₐlmuʾminūnᵃthe believers.
۝١٠
Private conversation is only from Satan that he may grieve those who have believed, but he will not harm them at all except by permission of Allah. And upon Allah let the believers rely.
58:11:1yāʾayyuhāO you who believe!
58:11:5qīlᵃit is said
58:11:7tafassaḥū"Make room,"
58:11:9ₐlmajālisⁱthe assemblies
58:11:10faᵢfsaḥūthen make room,
58:11:11yafsaḥⁱAllah will make room
58:11:14waʾiðāAnd when
58:11:15qīlᵃit is said
58:11:16ᵤnšuzū"Rise up,"
58:11:17faᵤnšuzūthen rise up;
58:11:18yarfaʕⁱAllah will raise
58:11:20ₐllaðīnᵃthose who
58:11:22minkumamong you
58:11:23waₐllaðīnᵃand those who
58:11:24ʾūtūwere given
58:11:25ₐlʕilmᵃthe knowledge,
58:11:26darajātⁱⁿ(in) degrees.
58:11:27waₐllahᵘAnd Allah
58:11:28bimāof what
58:11:30ḫabīrᵘⁿ(is) All-Aware.
۝١١
O you who have believed, when you are told, "Space yourselves" in assemblies, then make space; Allah will make space for you. And when you are told, "Arise," then arise; Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
58:12:1yāʾayyuhāO you who believe!
58:12:5nājaytumᵘyou privately consult
58:12:6ₐlrrasūlᵃthe Messenger,
58:12:8baynᵃbefore
58:12:10najwākumyour private consultation,
58:12:11ṣadaqaẗᵃⁿcharity.
58:12:13ḫayrᵘⁿ(is) better
58:12:15waʾaṭharᵘand purer.
58:12:16faʾinBut if
58:12:19faʾinnᵃthen indeed,
58:12:20ₐllahᵃAllah
58:12:21ġafūrᵘⁿ(is) Oft-Forgiving,
58:12:22rraḥīmᵘⁿMost Merciful.
۝١٢
O you who have believed, when you [wish to] privately consult the Messenger, present before your consultation a charity. That is better for you and purer. But if you find not [the means] - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
58:13:1ʾaʾašfaqtumAre you afraid
58:13:4baynᵃbefore
58:13:6najwākumyour private consultation
58:13:7ṣadaqātⁱⁿcharities?
58:13:8faʾiðThen when
58:13:9lamyou do not
58:13:11watābᵃand Allah has forgiven
58:13:14faʾaqīmūthen establish
58:13:15ₐlṣṣalawẗᵃthe prayer
58:13:17ₐlzzakawẗᵃthe zakah,
58:13:18waʾaṭīʕūand obey
58:13:19ₐllahᵃAllah
58:13:20warasūlahuand His Messenger.
58:13:21waₐllahᵘAnd Allah
58:13:22ḫabīrᵘⁿᵐ(is) All-Aware
58:13:23bimāof what
58:13:24taʕmalūnᵃyou do.
۝١٣
Have you feared to present before your consultation charities? Then when you do not and Allah has forgiven you, then [at least] establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
